During the summer, I constantly want to be by a body of water. You'll see when I return from Alabama in a week with even more river sights. This most recent getaway was in and around Mandeville, Louisiana: a few bayous, Lake Pontchartrain, and the Tchefuncte River. We launched on a clear Saturday morning but by late afternoon water spouts formed overhead (water tornadoes basically) and we had to motor back to camp. The weekend also offered up amazing brunches, tying the boat in for a dockside snack and cocktail, and a trip to the local farmer's market. While on the boat, we snacked on black cherry kombucha, cilantro hummus, chocolate cookies with sea salt, and mom-made mini turkey sandwiches. I love that my friend Noel's childhood cookie jar is a big orange bucket. The lakes and rivers were the best for swimming but the swamps were pure seduction. I want to return and kayak through their gravy, brackish passages. The trip reminded me of the core reason I love New Orleans so much. Part city girl, part country girl, I am comforted to live somewhere that offers up so much of both aspects to me.
